Invest in a quality carpet
The better quality your carpet is to begin with, the longer it will endure. Remember – if you buy cheap, you buy twice! Companies such as Select Flooring Direct offer a huge range of carpets to suit any space or decor. From modern slim designs to luxurious deep pile carpets, you will find every style under the sun on their extensive website. They stock respected brands including Brintons and Cormar, as well as specialist waterproof carpets for bathrooms and striped stair carpets. Even better, many of their carpets come with a stain resistant warranty, meaning you can be sure your carpet will stay as a good as new.
Caring for your carpet
A stain resistant warranty alone won’t keep your carpet looking fresh, however. There are also many things you can do to extend the life of your carpet. Hoovering is perhaps obvious, but is extremely important. Many don’t realise the amount of hovering which is needed to remove dirt that isn’t visible to the eye – high-traffic areas need to be passed over up to six times with your hoover to make sure they’re spotless. If you do spill anything on a carpet it should be cleaned up immediately, as otherwise it can oxidise into a permanent stain that’s impossible to remove. Carpets often come with a handy advice sheet telling you the ways in which different types of stains should be dealt with.
Perhaps the best way to extend the life of your carpet is to get it professionally cleaned. It’s advisable that you do this every 18-24 months for optimum results. Respectable companies such as Pilgrim Payne (who have been in the business since 1850!) are the safest bet, as many disreputable companies use techniques which can seriously damage your carpet. Pilgrim Payne are members of the National Carpet Cleaners Association and a have a technique of deep-cleaning carpets quickly, safely and comprehensively.
In many cultures it is standard practice to remove shoes inside the house. Insist that your family and visitors do the same! Experts estimate it can take up to 17 steps before the soles of your shoes are clean, so a door mat isn’t always enough. The removal of shoes is the surest way to keep your carpet free from muddy footprints and other unwelcome stains. It is also a good idea to rotate your furniture, as a heavy sofa on the same patch of carpet can cause areas of excessive wear and tear. It is advised that you rearrange your room every six months in order to prevent this happening.
